MediaWiki talk:Sidebar

Question - why does the edited sidebar not appear on the main page, but seemingly everywhere else? -CMaster 16:58, 15 November 2006 (GMT)

It's cached - See MediaWiki for a bit more information. You can purge indvidual pages, but for a sitewide purge, a table needs to be purged. I may add a script to clear the cache now and again, if it's a problem. --Brammers 17:04, 15 November 2006 (GMT)

Proposal

I propose we change the sidebar to including a second navigation box:

  • navigation
    • mainpage|mainpage
    • Special:Allpages|All Pages
    • portal-url|portal
    • currentevents-url|currentevents
    • recentchanges-url|recentchanges
    • randompage-url|randompage
    • helppage|help
    • http://www.techhaven.org%7CTechhaven Network
  • resources
    • Guides|Guides
    • :Category:Missions|Missions
    • :Category:THNAPI|THN API
    • Project:Policy|Project Policies
    • Project:FAQ|FAQ

This would then allow more of the direction for new users to the site, without requiring them to keep going to back to the main page to find another link to head off of, this would also consolidate the current wiki section pages into their own box. Comment: Looks good, I would move THN API to tbe bottom of the list. Admin-avatar.pngBrammers  (t)  (c) 13:47, 8 April 2008 (BST)

Comment: I put the Policies and FAQ at the bottom of the list, as they are a more administrative side of the links - I consider the API to be part of the wiki content New.png Delphi  (t)  (c) 13:52, 8 April 2008 (BST)

Comment: Are you suggesting we replace the existing navigation and toolbox with these two?

navigation

  • mainpage|mainpage
  • Special:Allpages|All Pages
  • portal-url|portal
  • currentevents-url|currentevents
  • recentchanges-url|recentchanges
  • randompage-url|randompage
  • helppage|help
  • http://www.techhaven.org%7CTechhaven Network

resources

  • Guides|Guides
  • Category:Missions|Missions
  • Category:THNAPI|THN API
  • Project:Policy|Project Policies
  • Project:FAQ|FAQ

I would see it that we needed to keep resources seperate from user tools. i.e Recent changes is a tool when updating wiki not viewing imo, same with Help. i.e.

navigation

  • mainpage|mainpage
  • Guides|Guides
    • :Category:Missions|Missions
  • Special:Allpages|All Pages
  • portal-url|portal
  • currentevents-url|currentevents
  • randompage-url|randompage
  • http://www.techhaven.org%7CTechhaven Network

resources

  • Project:Policy|Project Policies
  • Project:FAQ|FAQ
  • recentchanges-url|recentchanges
  • Category:THNAPI|THN API
  • helppage|help

what about Upload file or What links here? Admin-avatar.png Logan Ford  (t)  (c)13:58, 8 April 2008 (BST)

  • Comment: No the toolbox is hard coded into the design - we can't easily change that - Im suggesting adding a second box to the side panel called resources and use it to highlight certain important - or quickly linked to sections, i.e. missions, guides etc. any portals on the site which are used lots New.png Delphi  (t)  (c) 14:36, 8 April 2008 (BST)

comment

Understood :) Looks all good then! Admin-avatar.png Logan Ford  (t)  (c)14:53, 8 April 2008 (BST)

  • If it makes the site easier, to edit and use then do it! --Reaction 19:19, 8 April 2008 (BST)
  • Seems perfectly reasonable to me - if something's commonly used and useful to users, make it accessible at all times :) --StevenJ 11:00, 9 April 2008 (BST)

Ok seen as everyone is happy for it to change - I have changed it :) New.png Delphi  (t)  (c) 12:03, 9 April 2008 (BST)

Error

There is an error with the link to the THN API articles - can someone find out what the proper link should be and then I can change it (or you can change it yourself!) New.png Delphi  (t)  (c) 19:43, 9 April 2008 (BST)

Fixed the broken link - The starting page I'm using in the THN API docs is this page - THNapi:Main_Page --Brammers 23:57, 9 April 2008 (BST)
