It looks like this wiki entry has grown really big... my recent experience with getting NC running was extremely simple actually..
I just did sudo apt-get install wine and launched the client. Didn't have to configure a single thing. (Mr Trip)
I think it's worth adding this at the start, and keeping the rest for anyone who does have problems. I do remember when I tried running NC under Linux, I didn't have to edit the hosts file, so it doesn't suprise me that it needs one command.
