Research(RES)

Research is a intelligence subskill, that produces item blueprints for Construction and indentifying item parts. Without a Researcher, Constructor cannot make any items so it is considered the second most important tradeskill in the game.

Class and Profession

Research requires high intelligence, so naturally, most Researchers are Spies. It is not uncommon to see Monks picking this profession but their INT leveling process is slower.

Like Engineer, picking Scientist as your starter profession will save a lot of credits at the start, giving TL30 Research tool for free and TL90 one at the end of Jones' missions.

Items

To perform research, you need these items:

• Research Tool with TL equal to or higher than the researched item. Tools above TL90 are available at Faction Supply Managers.
• Empty Datacube
• Research Substance if an item is above TL30

Researching Rare Part does not need a datacube.

Basic Procedure

1. Open Processor window(F7)
2. Place the Research Tool in the first slot
3. Place the item in the second slot
4. (Optional) place the empty datacube in the third slot. Empty cubes are added automatically when starting the process.
5. Make sure you have enough Research Substance in the inventory. Press the START button.

The process can result in 3 different ways:

1. SUCCESS: datacube changes into a blueprint and placed into Result box.
2. FAIL: blueprint is not created and you need to start all over again. Research substance is consumed. This also results in minor exp loss.
3. CRITICAL FAIL: blueprint is not created and the datacube is destroyed. In the case of rare parts, the part is destroyed.

Research can be used not only to get blueprints of weapons, but also armor, turrets, vehicle keys, parts, medkits and drugs. Rare items, some quest items and faction epic items cannot be researched.

Rare part indentification

Research can reveal which item the rare part belongs to. Researching rare parts do not need a datacube but in case of fail the part is consumed. With INT capped, it is not advised to attempt to research rare parts below 200 points in RES.

Blueprint duplication

Any blueprint can be duplicated without the original item. Just place a blueprint as the item to be researched and it will be cloned into a new empty datacube. Just keep in mind that blueprint itself is just a TL30 item, but the difficulty of replicating the blueprint is the same as the item it was created of.

Other bonuses

Outpost

Outpost (OP) are useful to researchers for 2 reasons. Lab outposts offer a bonus to your RES. If your clan owns the OP, you get a +44 bonus whenever you’re in the same zone as the OP. Other options that can be set by the owner allow +33 to clan allies, +22 to allied and neutral factions and even +11 for enemy factions. You’ll know if you’re getting the bonus when you enter the zone the OP is in. You’ll see a bonus in the right-corner of your screen. (and the bonus in your stats)

Also, the Yo's at outposts offer cheaper Research Substance and datacubes than Cryton's.
