When you create your new runner in Neocron, you will be asked to choose a profession, a class, a name, and your character's appearance. You will also be asked if you want to complete the Neocron tutorial. If this is your first runner it is definitely worth playing through the tutorial to get to grips with the basic controls of the game.
Character Professions
The first step to creating a new runner is choosing a profession. Professions are customizable statistics templates that assign some of your points automatically (these can be changed later in the character creation process). Professions also impact some very first missions and rewards that your character can collect, and impact your starting equipment. Although, this choice decides what character class and equipment you start with, you can always change you skill allocation with loss of memory (LOM) pills, purchasable from Taylor's Biochem and other drug stores. Your character's profession will be listed against your runner when other people search for you on the CityCom, even if you never followed through with the profession and went down another path.
Below is a list of available professions.
- Assassin - A specialist in long distance fighting, limits class selection to Private Eye and Spy
- Berserker - A specialist in close combat melee and brawling, limits class selection to Private Eye and Gentank
- Driver - Capable of driving many bikes, tanks, gliders and even hoverbombers - limits class selection to Private Eye, Spy and Gentank
- Engineer - A constructor capable of turning blueprints and parts into constructed items, limits class selection to Private Eye, Spy and Monk
- Field Medic - A monk specializing in healing and protecting themselves and others
- Hacker - Somebody specializing in hacking, limits class selection to Private Eye, Spy and Monk
- Infiltrator - A reconnaissance specialist utilizing stealth to close in on their enemies. Limits class selection to Private Eye and Spy
- Inquisitor - A monk specializing in dealing damage
- Preacher - A hybrid monk capable of healing themselves and dealing damage to others
- Rigger - Specialises in remote fighting uses drones, limits class selection to Private Eye and Spy
- Scientist - A researcher who creates blueprints of items to be used by engineers, limits class selection to Spy and Monk
- Smuggler - A barterer who haggles to get the best possible price, limits class selection to Spy and Monk
- Soldier - A heavy weapons specialist, limits class selection to Gentank and Private Eye
Profession Classes are what decide you starting items, also what your points will be based in. If your new to the game, you are going to want to keep the points that it gives you. Personally I would start the game with a Berserker / Soldier / Assassin / Infiltrator / Inquisitor. Now the Inquisitor and the Berserker are very nice to start with, because they require no ammo to be bought for their weapons.
Character classes
Once you have chosen your profession, the next screen during the character creation process will allow you to select an appropriate class, limited by your profession choice. On this screen you can also give your character a name and select a gender using the XX/XY options. The classes available are Private Eye, Spy, Tank and PSI Monk. This choice will generally define your playstyle and what items are available for you to use in-game, and change your assignment of caps for your main statistics Intelligence, Strength, Constitution, Dexterity and PSI.
